BIOGRAPHY: Mary Quant

The study of the history of fashion has always excited me due to the loop that fashion revolves in. You see repetitions everyday of old fashion styles that reappear in a new invented way to be up to date and modern which is something that I love to unfold and trace back to it roots. This started on a night out into London recently where I clumsily stumbled into a girl who was wearing the shortest mini skirt I had ever seen and wondered where it originally come from. It all began with Mary Quant; London Fashion designer in the late 50’s-60’s. She brought the mini skirt to life as a new youthful look for the teenagers and young adults of London so they could avoid dressing like their mothers. Mary Quant’s mini skirt became renowned as the epitome of the  ‘London Look’. She opened a little boutique in Chelsea and designed many more iconic looks, a few of her favourites being PVC lace up boots, little plastic raincoats and cute pinafore dresses. She designed the fashion of London during the 60’s and received her OBE for contribution to the fashion industry.
So next time you head out wearing your beautiful figure flattering mini skirt, remember, always give thanks to the lovely lady that made it all possible; Mary Quant everybody.

CAMDEN MARKET

A day trip out to Camden Market makes me wonder why have i never ventured out to this part of London before. In every miniscule corner there was a new innovative garment that i had never set my eyes on before. One side was sectioned for the 'goths' with the jet black, spikey concoctions. Next was the space trends with spacey alien like shapes and colours, then burlesque and provocative section with the corsets and stockings. The most appreciated section would be the Vintage section which contained some absolute favorites of mine; fur coats, denim jackets, lace &leather.
From each section of trends i would stumble aimlessly across, i would almost certainly find something that would be worth spending my money on.
A next visit is already overdue and its only been 3 days since i experienced the most inspiring market over London. I'm too impatient to wait to get my hands on the girly, frilly, pretty garments in one of my most memorable stalls called Lilly J. I could walk into this stall/shop and instantly realise to myself 'this is a Denni shop'. Filled with delicate and creamy lace dresses with rose buttons and pretty ditzy patterns i could have easily walked away with the entire store.
It reminded me of an article i once read in ELLE magazine about the 'romance' of garments. This store reflected exactly what the article was speaking to me, but this time i could visualise the dreamy fairy-tale-like diaphanous dresses before me and had a desperate need to take them home.

Like the colours of the rainbow

My favourite time of the month snuck up on me again today as i received my monthly editions of ELLE and Glamour magazine. Too excited to see this months activities i pick up each copy to accompany me on my morning journey to school via train and bus.
Ipod in, ELLE magazine open, winter coat on, and i cant help but be instantly captivated by the double spread, early on in the magazine, of Dolce&Gabbana's new image. Looking like a rainbow, each model is proudly wearing a clash of bright colours. Reds, yellows, blues and purples fill the page exciting me for the upcoming winter which I'm sure cannot be a dull colourless one. It's exhilarating to see the return of old vintage looks such as the sophisticated tweed jacket and the snuggly fur coats that i cant wait to add to my collection. It seems as if the sporty sneaker look is still going strong toward the end of the year as well, maybe its about time i got my hands on a pair. My favourite I've seen so far have a union jack flag covering the entire sneaker. Very eccentric!
This years winter sure is going to be expensive but a bold and beautiful one!

Indian Summer

This 'Indian Summer' has really caught me off guard for the preparations of the autumn/winter seasons. As well as the endless coffees and hot chocolates that i am most definitely looking forward to sitting by the fire with, I'm ready to wack out the 'wonder onsie' that is aimlessly hanging in my closet ready to be worn beautifully, paired with my magnificent vintage faux fur coat. Instead I'm taking off the layers and slipping into a fluorescent orange bikini and denim shorts attempting to catch some rays.

Bikini: New Look
Denim Shorts: Hollister
